Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT)

Idealized Example

Patient Example

Background: Though AVNRT is the most common arrhythmia in outpatients until the development of AF at older ages, AVNRT is relatively uncommon after heart surgery. It appears very similar to JET, though as an AV nodal dependent reentrant rhythm, it generally displays a sudden onset and termination, often with rates higher than expected with JET.

AEG: AVNRT shows a 1:1 AV ratio, with an atrial signal near or overlapping the terminal portion of the QRS complex with a VA time typically less than 70 msec (or around 2 small boxes on the standard ECG).   The AEG appears similar to an AEG of JET, though AVNRT is less commonly post-operatively, is more likely to have a higher rate and demonstrates a sudden onset.

Adenosine: AVNRT can be converted with adenosine.

Atrial Overdrive Pacing: AVNRT can be overdrive pace terminated.
