Multifocal Atrial Tachycardia (MAT)

Idealized Example

Background: MAT is uncommon post-operatively, and appears to be more frequent in patients with concurrent pulmonary concerns.

AEG: MAT typically has an irregular atrial rate, an irregular ventricular rate and variable P wave morphology. MAT is often interspersed with periods of sinus rhythm. This arrhythmia is caused by multiple sites of automaticity within the atrium resulting in variable atrial signals and P wave morphology. It may demonstrate both a 1:1 Atrial to ventricular ratio, or more atrial than ventricular signals depending on the rate of the MAT and the AV nodal conduction.

Adenosine: It is typically not responsive to adenosine.

Atrial Overdrive Pacing: In some cases MAT may be suppress with overdrive pacing, though it typically returns after pacing has stopped.
